Maryland State Highway Administration, Office of Materials Technology
The Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA) has adopted a regional welder's certification program for the testing and certification of welders in the shielded metal arc welding process (SMAW). This went into effect in March, 2004.
The program is administered and cards issued by the American Welding Society (AWS). Welders seeking certification can contact any AWS Accredited Test Facility and request to be tested in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration’s Mid-Atlantic Structural Committee for Economic Fabrication Procedure SCEF 01.
The location of the nearest AWS Test Facility can be obtained by contacting AWS at 1-800-443-WELD Ext. 273 or from their web page - http://www.aws.org - and clicking on Certification. The welder will be responsible for the fee charged by the test facility.
The certification will be accepted by the following DOTs: Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania.
