Red Light Cameras

Red light running is one of the major causes of crashes, injuries and deaths at signalized intersections. The Maryland State Highway Administration supports a comprehensive approach to intersection safety that incorporates engineering, education and enforcement countermeasures to prevent red light running and improve intersection safety. Research indicates that red light cameras can be an effective countermeasure in preventing red light running. However, they should only be installed where a safety problem associated with red light running has been documented and other means have failed to solve the problem.
