3/1/2011SHA Rehabilitates the MD 202 Bridge in Landover

STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION BEGINS REPLACEMENT OF MD 202 BRIDGE DECK IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

Motorists Will be Detoured and Should Expect Delays

Next week, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) begins a $3.3 million bridge deck replacement project on the MD 202 (Landover Road) bridge over I-95/I-495 in Landover.  Weather permitting, the project should be complete spring 2012.

Crews will remove and replace the existing bridge deck on the MD 202 Bridge.  SHA will also upgrade the traffic loop detectors for the signal at the ramp from westbound MD 202 to southbound I-95/I-495, install a new pole and cabinet for the existing traffic camera on the bridge, improve the bridge abutment and slope protection, and resurface the approaching roadway.

Built in 1962, the bridge is beginning to show signs of deterioration specifically in the concrete bridge deck.  The MD 202 Bridge is structurally safe and the work will help to extend its service life an additional 30 to 50 years.

SHA is managing the construction through four phases.  The first phase, beginning this spring, includes closing the access from westbound MD 202 to the ramp for southbound I-95/I-495.  The closure will last for the duration of the project.  The ramp from eastbound MD 202 to southbound I-95/I-495 will remain open during construction.

Motorists can expect delays on MD 202 and I-95.I-495 during construction.  SHA will close lanes on MD 202 and I-95/I-495:

·         Eastbound/Westbound MD 202: single lane closures Monday through Friday between  9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight Monday through Friday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

·         Eastbound MD 202:  double lane closures overnight Monday through Friday between    9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

·         Northbound/Southbound I-95/I-495: single lane closures Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

·         Left turn lane from westbound MD 202 to the ramp for southbound I-95/I-495 and the ramp from westbound MD 202 to southbound I-95/I-495 will be closed 24/7 for the duration of the project

Drivers wishing to travel from westbound MD 202 to southbound I-95/I-495 will be directed to travel west on MD 202, turn left on Lottsford Road, and turn right onto Arena Drive to access southbound I-95/I-495.

Drivers wishing to travel from southbound Lottsford Road to southbound I-95/I-495 will be directed to continue traveling south on Lottsford Road, turn right onto Arena Drive to access southbound I-95/I-495.

Crews will use flaggers, variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  SHA awarded the contract to Anchor Construction Company.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
