3/28/2011SHA resurfaced shared ramp from southbound I-95 to MD 5

STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION RESURFACES TWO RAMPS ON MD 5 IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

SHA Will Temporarily Close Ramps Overnight to Make Improvements

Next week the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) begins a $235,000 resurfacing project on the shared ramp from southbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) to Auth Road/southbound MD 5 (Branch Avenue) in Camp Springs.  The shared ramp splits into two separate ramps to serve motorists accessing either Auth Road or southbound MD 5.  Weather permitting, construction will be complete this summer.

Work includes removing the top layer of asphalt and resurfacing both ramps.  SHA will also install new pavement markings.

The work is necessary because the base layer of the roadway has settled and created an uneven driving surface on the ramp.  This irregular surface can pose a safety hazard for motorists exiting from southbound I-95/I-495 to MD 5 and Auth Road.

SHA will close a single lane on southbound I-95/I-495 overnight, Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.  SHA will also close the shared ramp overnight Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The following detour is in effect for southbound I-95/I-495:

For traffic using the southbound I-95/I-495 ramp to southbound MD 5 and Auth Road:  motorists will be directed to the ramp for westbound MD 414 (Saint Barnabas Road) and use the MD 414 interchange to re-enter northbound I-95/I-495 to head back to southbound MD 5.  (This detour is approximately seven miles).

SHA will use flaggers, variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  SHA awarded the contract to Aggregate Industries, Inc. of Greenbelt, MD.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
