SHA will close the Downes Road bridge over I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) in northern Baltimore County for major rehabilitation work beginning on or about 8 a.m. Monday, June 20.
The bridge, constructed in 1958, is structurally safe but needs deck replacement and other rehabilitation work to prolong its safe service life another 30-50 years. The bridge will remain closed through summer 2011 while construction crews remove and replace the concrete bridge deck (riding surface) and wing walls; repair concrete abutments; modify the shape of the piers and clean and paint the steel beams.
On or about 8 a.m. Monday, June 20, the bridge will be closed to all traffic and the following detour routes will be in effect:
Detour for westbound Downes Road traffic to York Road (MD 45):
Turn right onto Sampson Road
Turn left onto Old York Road (MD 439)
Take Old York Road to York Road north or south
Detour for York Road traffic to Downes Road east of the bridge:
Take York Road to Old York Road
Go past the I-83 interchange and turn right onto Sampson Road
Take Sampson Road south to Downes Road
The 24-hour-a-day bridge detour will be in effect through late summer. There will also be temporary single-lane closures on northbound I-83 at any time except between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; and along southbound I-83 at any time except between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.
The State’s contractor for the $1.3 million project is PDI-Sheetz Construction Corporation of Linthicum.
Citizens who have questions about the project may contact the bridge project field office at 240-382-4844, toll-free at SHA’s District 4 Office in Hunt Valley at 1-866-998-0367 or by email at email@example.com.
