The Office of Real Estate acquires real estate and provides real estate services for the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) and other Maryland Department of Transportation (and State) projects in a timely, effective and customer-oriented manner.
The Director's Office implements MDOT SHA-wide policies and procedures.
This division reviews all appraisals used in acquiring real estate and setting just compensation to property owners.
This division reviews all real estate acquisitions to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. It also presents cases to the State Roads Commission for approval to start condemnation proceedings when negotiations fail.
This division administers support functions for ORE. The division is composed of five sections:
This section maintains an inventory of all Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) real estate holdings. It coordinates with the other MDOT business units and MDOT headquarters.
This section is responsible for the disposal of excess MDOT SHA real estate.
This section stores all records pertaining to the acquisition of real estate for MDOT SHA. It researches MDOT SHA's claim to existing rights of way.
These offices are parallel to and under the administrative control of the district engineer's offices. They are responsible for the field activities to acquire right of way for the Capital Program and district operations. These activities include providing cost estimates, appraisals, relocation assistance and the acquisition of real estate. The district offices also rent surplus MDOT SHA real estate within district boundaries.
This section transfers road segments from MDOT SHA to various local agencies.
This division is responsible for real estate acquisitions from utilities and other public agencies, and for special programs such as enhancements and wetland mitigation. It oversees acquisition projects for district offices. The coordination of the Outdoor Advertising Program is also assigned to this division.
