Maryland State Traffic Trends Introduction

Maryland Highway Traffic Trends summarize State traffic volume data.

These reports do the following:

  1. Present the Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) and the hourly, daily, monthly and seasonal fluctuations in traffic volumes at individual stations.
  2. Identify factors from individual stations and Automatic Traffic Reporting (ATR) groups with similar characteristics that can be used to expand short term (typically 6, 12, 13, 24 or 48 hour) counts to AADTs.

There are permanent, continuous counting ATR stations throughout Maryland and seven continuously operating toll facilities. Trend reports contain tabulated data from these stations.

The data in Maryland Highway Traffic Trends was collected by the Data Services Engineering Division (DSED) of the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) Office of Planning and Preliminary Engineering (OPPE).

For Traffic Trends, stations were grouped based on functional classification; an additional summer seasonal group reflects recreational traffic patterns during summer months.

The ATR station groups are as follows:

  1. Group 1 - Rural Interstate
  2. Group 2 - Rural Other (including other rural arterials and rural collectors)
  3. Group 3 - Urban Interstate
  4. Group 4 - Urban Other (including other urban freeways and expressways, and other urban arterial systems)
  5. Group 5 - Summer Seasonal (stations that record high summertime traffic)

Note 1

  • P0072 - IS 795 NB South of Mt. Wilson Rd (collecting Northbound Data)
  • P0073 - IS 795 SB South of Mt. Wilson Rd (collecting Southbound Data)
  • The merging of traffic stations P0072 and P0073 started in 2006 so the data for both directions can be reported like all other ATRS.

Note 2

  • P0025 - MD 295 NB South of MD 100 (collecting Northbound Data)
  • P0081 - MD 295 SB South of MD 100 (collecting Southbound Data)
  • The merging of traffic stations P0025 and P0081 started in 2011 so the data for both directions can be reported like all other ATRs.

Note 3

  • P0044 - IS 68 EB East of MD 546 (collecting Eastbound Data)
  • P0082 - IS 68 WB East of MD 546 (collecting Westbound Data)
  • The merging of traffic stations P0044 and P0082 started in 2012 so the data for both directions can be reported like all other ATRs.
