Idling Practices

The Maryland State Highway Administration is saving money and reducing emissions through a vehicle equipment idling policy. The newest idling policy for SHA’s vehicle and equipment fleet took effect on September 22, 2009. The policy restricts the operation of a motor vehicle engine for more than five consecutive minutes when the vehicle is not in motion. The two exceptions to this policy are when a unit is deployed along a state route in preparation for winter operations, or when a unit is functioning under an emergency situation or maintaining traffic through the use of emergency lighting. The policy applies to all operators of SHA vehicles and equipment, as well as drivers of consultant support vehicles. SHA has saved more than 170,000 gallons of light duty gasoline because of this idling policy.
