Constructing roads is only one part of the story at the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA). The Office of Maintenance maintains more than 17,000 lane miles of roads and more than 2,500 bridges across the state. In addition to regular upkeep of roadways (resurfacing, repainting lines, cleaning), the Office of Maintenance also supports and assists MDOT SHA districts in keeping roads passable during inclement weather. Maintenance's primary mission is to maintain a safe network of roads, but we also have a commitment to maintain a safe environment for all Marylanders. Reducing our impact on the environment requires us to think creatively and adopt practices that are cleaner and greener. Below are descriptions of our most significant “green” maintenance practices.
