Roads We Maintain

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) owns and maintains all non-toll, numbered roads - such as I-495 (the Capital Beltway), MD 355 (Rockville Pike) and US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) - in Maryland's 23 counties.

  • Roads without a number are maintained by the county or municipality.
  • Toll roads (including I-95, the Bay Bridge and the Fort McHenry Tunnel) are owned and maintained by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA).
  • In Baltimore City, local roads, interstates and numbered routes are maintained by the Baltimore City Department of Transportation (Toll roads I-95, I-395 and I-895, within the city are maintained by the Maryland Transportation Authority).
