(May 31, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will host a morning pit stop for Baltimore’s Bike to Work Day tomorrow on Friday, June 1. Located at the corner of Guilford Avenue and East Monument Street between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., the MDOT SHA grassroots event will remind bicyclists and drivers to “Look Out for Each Other.”

There is no fender bender in a crash between a moving vehicle and bicycle. Unfortunately, fatal bicycle crashes in Maryland are increasing. More than 80 percent of all bicycle crashes result in injury. Over the last five years, 33 people were killed and more than 3,100 were injured. With marked bike lanes, signage and bicycle trails and education efforts, MDOT SHA is raising awareness of bicycle safety through education and engineering.

MDOT SHA is also continuing its bicycle safety campaign, Look Out for Each Other, which stresses the role of the vehicle driver in bicycle safety.  Featuring Maryland professionals who commute with bicycles, the campaign reminds drivers “A Cyclist Might Be Someone You Know.”  With special emphasis during the spring and summer months when bicycle crashes increase, the year-long campaign also advises bicyclists to obey the rules of the road, ride predictably and stay visible when riding at night.

Bike to Work Day is a part of the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. MDOT SHA is proud to be part of local efforts coordinated by the Baltimore Metropolitan Council. MDOT SHA is partnering with Twenty 20 Cycling Co. again this year to provide free bike tune ups at the Monument Street/ Guilford Avenue pit stop.
