MDOT Projects Win 17 Awards from Maryland Quality Initiative (MdQI) Consortium

BALTIMORE, MD/ January 27, 2017 – The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) has gained new honors for delivering outstanding transportation projects in Maryland. Last night, Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn and MDOT Business Unit executives accepted 17 of 22 MdQI Awards of Excellence presented for planning studies, programs and construction projects completed in 2016.

The Maryland Quality Initiative (MdQI) consortium of private sector industry associations and public sector transportation agencies hosted the annual presentation of the statewide MdQI Awards of Excellence at the Baltimore Convention Center. MDOT received multiple awards for two major projects completed in 2016: Construction of Dual Steel Bridges on US 13 over the Pocomoke River by the State Highway Administration (SHA), and the Deck Rehabilitation and Joint Modifications of Bridges on I-95 South of the Fort McHenry Tunnel by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA).

“I am very proud of the MDOT professionals who develop, operate and maintain one of the best transportation networks in the world,” said Secretary Rahn.

MDOT is comprised of five business units and one Authority: the Secretary’s Office, SHA, MDTA, Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), Maryland Port Administration (MPA), and the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA).

This unique set up provides the state’s leadership with the ability to develop a coordinated and balanced approach to transportation. MDOT’s mission is to be a customer-driven leader that delivers safe, sustainable, intelligent, and exceptional transportation solutions in order to connect our customers to life’s opportunities.

MdQI is dedicated to continuous quality improvement in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Maryland’s transportation system. MdQI was founded by MDOT’s SHA and private sector representatives in 1993. The group has expanded its mission and activities to include other MDOT transportation business units, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), local government transportation agencies, and industry associations.

MdQI will host its 25th annual conference and awards program in Baltimore in 2018. For more information on MDOT and the transportation business units, follow us on twitter @mdotnews or visit our website mdot.maryland.gov. For more information on MdQI, visit the website mdqi.org.
