(June 24, 2009) – Beginning this week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin resurfacing and safety improvements along several State highways in Eastern and Southern Prince George’s County between US 301 and the Washington D.C. line. Weather permitting; the resurfacing projects should be complete spring 2010.

The $4.6 million project includes milling and grinding the existing road surfaces and new pavement markings. Roadways included are:

• MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) between the Anne Arundel County line and Marlboro Race Track Road, a total of three and one-half miles, beginning June 26;
• MD 382 (Croom Road) between Brooks Church Road and Candy Hill Road, a total of one and one-half miles, beginning mid-July;
• MD 223 (Woodyard Road) between MD 5 (Branch Avenue) and Green Street, a total of three miles, beginning late July;
• US 301 (Blue Star Memorial Highway) between the Charles County line and Clymer Drive, a total of 7.5 miles, beginning mid-August; and
• MD 193 (Watkins Park Drive) between MD 214 (Central Avenue) and MD 202 (Largo Road), a total of four miles, beginning mid-August.

Motorists traveling along these roads may encounter single-lane and shoulder closures, and possible flagging operations Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and overnights Monday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

This project is funded through President Barack Obama’s landmark American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This project, together with other ARRA projects, is stimulating Maryland’s economy by preserving and creating thousands of jobs.

SHA awarded the contract to F.O. Day Co., Inc. Those who have questions about traffic operations along State numbered routes in Prince George’s County may call SHA’s District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll-free at 1-800-749-0737. SHA reminds all drivers to buckle up, obey posted speed limits, think orange, and stay alert in the work zone.

During the next several months there could be more than 350 work zones across Maryland. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pickups.
