(January 8, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) advises travelers that a major water line break has closed northbound and southbound US 1 (Belair Road) from the Dunfield Road/MD 43 (White Marsh Blvd.) ramp intersection to the Silver Spring Road intersection in Perry Hall.

Portable message signs, temporary traffic signs and traffic barrels are in place to alert and guide motorists during the closure. Northbound US 1 is detoured onto MD 43 and southbound US 1 is detoured onto Silver Spring Road.  MDOT SHA advises motorists traveling between Harford County and I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) to avoid US 1 and use I-95 or MD 147 (Harford Road) as alternate routes.

The water line is expected to be repaired today. However, it will take several days to repair several hundred feet of damaged roadway to safely accommodate normal traffic volumes. Only local residents and proprietors will be guided through the work zone to enter and exit their driveways.

The Baltimore County Department of Public Works, Baltimore City utility crews and their contractors are on the scene to perform emergency water line and roadway repairs.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on the road and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.

Editor’s Note

From intersection improvements to widening and new interchange construction, MDOT SHA is investing in projects to enhance the commute and daily travel for millions of Marylanders.  MDOT SHA maintains more than 2,500 bridges and 17,000 miles of non-toll state roads – the interstate, US and state numbered routes in Maryland’s 23 counties.
