Drivers Should Reduce Work Zone Speeds, Expect Changing Traffic Patterns

(May 4. 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin bridge maintenance work on locations on I-495 (Capital Beltway) next week. Starting Monday, May 9, crews will take measurements on the Outer Loop of I-495 at the I-95 south ramp and will also begin joint seal replacement work on the Inner Loop of I-495 near Exit 41, Clara Barton Parkway. The work is expected to be complete by late spring, weather permitting.

To complete the repairs, crews will work the following schedule:

  • Beginning Monday at 9 a.m., crews will begin the measurement work on the Outer Loop of I-495 at the I-95 south ramp near the Prince George’s County border. To safely perform this work, crews will intermittently close alternating single traffic lanes, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until all measurement work is complete.
  • Beginning Monday at 9 p.m., crews will begin the joint seal replacement work on the Inner Loop of I-495 near the Clara Barton Parkway exit ramp. Crews will intermittently close single and multiple alternating traffic lanes, overnight, Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. until all work is complete.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
