​Traffic Signal and Pedestrian Improvements Designed to Enhance Safety ​

(July 7, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is advancing projects to improve safety and mobility at key intersections along US 29 (Columbia Pike/Colesville Road) in Montgomery County. 

Preliminary work is underway on installation of a new traffic signal on US 29 at Hastings Drive, just south I-495 (Capital Beltway). Work is expected to be completed by the fall, weather permitting. In addition to a full-color traffic signal, the nearly $200,000 project includes a new high-visibility crosswalk across US 29, with countdown pedestrian signals and button-activated accessible pedestrian signals. About 60,000 motorists use this section of US 29 each day, and the system will significantly improve pedestrian safety. 

While the new signal is installed, motorists should expect daytime, off-peak single-lane closures on US 29 and Hastings Drive/Granville Drive between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays. Motorists traveling this section of US 29 during work hours should anticipate extra travel time. 

In the coming weeks, MDOT SHA also will install a new crosswalk and other Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant improvements on the north leg of the US 29/Stewart Lane​​ intersection to help enhance pedestrian safety. Work on this $70,000 project is expected be completed this summer. During this project, drivers can expect single-lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. during the crosswalk installation. 

Additionally, MDOT SHA is installing a new traffic and pedestrian signal at US 29 at Oak Leaf Drive​ in White Oak. The nearly $200,000 project includes a full-color traffic signal and a marked crossing on the south side across US 29, with countdown pedestrian signals and button-activated accessible pedestrian signals. The new signal includes a protected left-turn phase for northbound US 29 turns onto Oak Leaf Drive. Work is expected to be completed by the fall, weather permitting, and will require daytime off-peak single-lane closures on US 29 and Oak Leaf Drive between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

All three projects are being performed by McLean Contracting Co., of Glen Burnie.
