Speed Limit Reduced in the Work Zone to Protect Motorists and Work Crews; Citations Will be Issued After 21-Day Warning Period

(March 3, 2023) – In an ongoing effort to improve work zone safety, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin use of the Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement system next week in the work zone on the MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) bridge over the Amtrak railway line in Anne Arundel County. After a 21-day warning period, Maryland State Police will authorize citations beginning Monday, March 27.

Beginning Monday, March 6, Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement system equipment will be placed in both directions of MD 295 within the work zone just south of I-195. After the warning period, by law, if Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement equipment records a vehicle traveling over the posted speed limit, a $40 fine may be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle. Motorists are reminded the speed limit through this work zone is 55 mph.

Contractor crews are repairing concrete and replacing bridge bearings on the two MD 295 bridges over the Amtrak railway. Drivers should expect shoulder closures and possible overnight single-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. All work will be complete this spring, weather permitting. The project is part of the agency’s commitment to maintain and preserve Maryland bridges and roadways.

The State Highway Administration understands the closures will inconvenience some travelers and asks all motorists to please stay alert and be patient as you pass through the work zone. The goal of Maryland SafeZones is to encourage a change in driver behavior and increase driver awareness of the impacts of speed-related crashes in work zones. Maryland SafeZones supports the State Highway Administration, Maryland State Police and Maryland Transportation Authority Police in the statewide effort to improve work zone safety.
