4/6/2010Road work on MD 28 in Montgomery County

New Lanes will Improve Traffic Flow between Aspen Hill and Silver Spring

(April 5, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will soon begin a $300,000 project to install two new left turn lanes at two locations on MD 28 (Norbeck Road) between MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and MD 182 (Layhill Road).  Weather permitting, the project should be complete summer 2010.

SHA will construct an 868-foot left turn lane along westbound MD 28 at Radwick Lane, and an 829-foot left turn lane along eastbound MD 28 at Barn Ridge Drive.  To accommodate the new turn lanes, SHA will widen westbound MD 28 at Radwick Lane and eastbound MD 28 at Barn Ridge Drive.  Other work includes installing new signs and pavement markings, grinding and overlaying the existing pavement at Radwick Lane and Barn Ridge Drive, and installing new curb and gutter at Barn Ridge Drive.

These improvements will allow for smoother traffic flow along MD 28.  Currently MD 28 is a two-lane road and during periods of high traffic volume, left turning vehicles cause significant delays for through traffic.  On average nearly 22,500 vehicles travel this section of MD 28 daily.

Motorists can expect single-lane closures along MD 28 Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and overnight Sunday through Thursday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.   SHA will provide flaggers, variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  SHA awarded the contract to Concrete General, Inc.
