7/20/2011SHA To Split Traffic on I-695 Southbound/Inner Loop at Liberty Road July 24
SHA will split travel lanes on southbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway Outer Loop) Exit 18 - MD 26 (Liberty Road) on or about Sunday night, July 24 as part of a $25 million project to replace the I-695 bridge over MD 26 (Liberty Road) in northwestern Baltimore County.
Beginning 7 p.m. Sunday night, July 24, SHA and its contractor will split the four lanes along the Outer Loop within the Exit 18 – Liberty Road interchange area.  There will be a single lane closure at 7 p.m. and a double lane closure at 10 p.m. between south of I-795 and north of Security Boulevard to install concrete barrier and new pavement markings overnight.  The ramp from southbound I-695 to Liberty Road will remain open overnight; however, Maryland State  Police may stop traffic on the ramp for up to 15 minutes at a time to allow crews and equipment to move safely through the work zone.
As of 5 a.m. Monday, July 25, all four lanes of the Outer Loop  will remain open to through traffic; however, there will be three through lanes open to the left of the concrete work zone barrier, and one through/exit lane open to the right of the work zone barrier.  All motorists traveling from southbound I-695 to Exit 18, Liberty Road must stay to the right of the barrier.
In case of inclement weather, the traffic split will be done on the night of Monday, July 25 or the next possible weeknight.
The three lane / one lane split traffic pattern will in effect until late fall 2011.  SHA urges motorists traveling on I-795, and the Outer Loop past I-795 toward Exit 18 and points south of Lochearn/Randallstown to plan for extra travel time on weekday mornings due to the changed traffic pattern and vehicles merging from I-795 onto I-695 prior to the Liberty Road interchange.
This I-695 bridge replacement project will improve safety and mobility for more than 210,600 motorists traveling this section of I-695 each day.  Built in 1961 and widened in 1968 and 1979, the structurally deficient bridge is being removed and replaced in several stages of construction.
Earlier this summer, SHA instituted a similar traffic split on northbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway Inner Loop) which will be in effect through fall 2011.  Citizens with questions about the I-695/Liberty Road interchange may contact the I-695 project field office at 410-277-4318, or SHA's District 4 office at 410-229-2300 or toll free at 1-866-998-0367.
