(August 3, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is alerting motorists of upcoming BGE utility work and a changing traffic pattern at the intersection of MD 176 (Dorsey Road) and MD 648 (Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard) in Ferndale.  Next week, Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) crews will continue installation of an underground 16-inch gas main at the intersection.  Work is scheduled to take place tonight, August 3 through Sunday, August 5 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.  BGE expects no service disruptions for this work.

To ensure safety for workers, motorists and pedestrians, SHA will deactivate the traffic signals during work hours and drivers will be directed through the intersection by police or flagpersons.  SHA is prohibiting left turns from northbound MD 648 onto westbound MD 176.  Northbound MD 648 will be reduced to one lane approaching the intersection.  Eastbound MD 176 and westbound 8th Avenue will be reduced to two lanes approaching the intersection.  Traffic signals will be restored to full color operation at the end of each work day.  Those who have questions about this project work may contact the SHA District 5 Office in Annapolis at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.  Safer driving.  Safer work zones.  For everyone!
