(August 28, 2012) – Starting in early September, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will resurface the approaches for the Tuckahoe Creek Bridge on MD 328 (Matthewstown Road) at the Talbot and Caroline County line.  Weather permitting, paving will begin immediately during the first week of September.  This phase of the project will take about two months to complete.

Motorists should expect intermittent single-lane closures Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both sides of the bridge during the paving operations.  SHA will use signs, cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.  

The new approach roadways will be completed by early October. The work is being done in preparation for the completion of a new 922-foot bridge over Tuckahoe Creek which is expected to be fully open early fall.

Motorists will have access across the Tuckahoe Creek Bridge throughout the paving work. Motorists traveling west will use the existing bridge while motorists traveling east will be diverted to the new bridge. 

The removal of the old bridge, built in 1947, will begin in October and will be completely removed by spring 2013. Final landscaping work on the project will also be completed in early spring 2013.  Construction of the new bridge began in November 2010.

The MD 328 bridge was dedicated in 1994 to famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass and the new bridge will continue to bear his name, SHA officials said.  The resurfacing project work is subcontracted to David A. Bramble, Inc. of Chestertown.  The overall bridge replacement contract is awarded to the Joseph B. Fay Company of Baltimore.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.   Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone!
