(February 6, 2013) – The State Highway Administration (SHA) will perform biennial inspections requiring short-term openings during the day and at night for the US 50 Business (Salisbury Parkway) drawbridge and the MD 991 (Main Street) drawbridge, both crossing the North Prong of the Wicomico River in Salisbury. The inspections will occur from Monday, February 11 to Thursday, February 14, weather permitting.

SHA does not anticipate any disruption to marine traffic; however crews will be on site during the day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The testing at night will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.  Motorists can expect delays as the bridges will be opened for a maximum of 15 minutes of every hour the structural, mechanical and electrical inspections are conducted.

If needed, the inspectors will relocate from the navigation channels upon request for vessel passage. Mariners should exercise caution when traveling under both drawbridges.

The bridge openings will not take place simultaneously. If inclement weather prevents the maintenance work as originally scheduled, it will be continued on the next business day with the same schedule until all inspections are completed.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.  Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone!
