(March 1, 2013) -- On three nights, beginning Sunday, March 3, the State Highway Administration (SHA) will start removing the steel girders from the old Frederick Road Bridge over I-695. During the removal, SHA will institute temporarily lane closures and detour traffic on I-695 at Frederick Road overnight.

Crews will initiate beam removal and closures on the inner loop (northbound) side first.  Once the northbound side is complete, crews will shift to the southbound lanes of I-695 (outer loop).

Double lane closures on the Beltway will begin at 10 p.m. each night.  At any time between midnight and 5 a.m., Maryland State Police (MSP) may slow and stop traffic on I-695 for up to 15 minutes at a time.  During the 15-minute closures, MSP and construction crews will detour all I-695 traffic through the Frederick Road interchange area ramps and back onto I-695.

Projected Work Schedule (weather permitting):

Sunday night, March 3 - Northbound I-695 (inner loop) Double lane closures: 10 p.m. - 5 a.m.
Traffic drags/15 minute detours: 12 a.m. - 5 a.m.

Monday night, March 4 - Southbound I-695 (outer loop) Double lane closures: 10 p.m. - 5 a.m.
Traffic drags/15 minute detours: 12 a.m. - 5 a.m.

Tuesday night, March 5 - Southbound I-695 (outer loop) Double lane closures: 10 p.m. - 5 a.m.
Traffic drags/15 minute detours: 12 a.m. - 5 a.m.

Motorists should plan for extra travel time along I-695 during the work period.  In case of inclement weather, the girder removal will take place on the next possible weeknight.

The steel girder removal and late night detours are part of SHA’s $16.5 million project to replace the Frederick Road bridge over I-695 and improve traffic operations and safety at the interchange.  SHA’s contractor for the project is American Infrastructure, Inc. of Fallston.
