(June 7, 2013) – Beginning Sunday night, June 9, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin the final phase of a $1 million safety and resurfacing project on MD 450 (Annapolis Road) between the I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) off ramp and 85th Avenue in New Carrollton. Weather permitting, all work on the project should be complete late summer.

SHA will remove top layer of pavement, patch and resurface all lanes, and re-stripe the roadway with new lane markings. The project replaces deteriorated pavement on the heavily traveled MD 450 corridor in New Carrollton. On average, 62,000 vehicles travel along this section of Annapolis Road each day. As part of the resurfacing phase of work, crews will add vehicle detection cameras and audible pedestrian signals (APS) to traffic signals at the MD 450/85th Street intersection. Once the resurfacing work is complete, crews will install new signage within the work zone.

During resurfacing, crews may close one or two lanes of MD 450 overnight, Sunday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. and Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Residents and travelers are advised that equipment used for construction can be loud and disruptive. SHA asks for your patience as crews work to complete the project. To date, crews have completed sidewalk, sidewalk ramp and median work along the project path.

As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
