(August 1, 2013) – The State Highway Administration (SHA) this week began a $4.3 million project to resurface and rehabilitate Liberty Road (MD 26) from the Baltimore City/County line to I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) in the Lochearn area of Baltimore County.  SHA’s project will improve safety and ride quality along Liberty Road and enhance pedestrian access to transit services.

“The Liberty Road corridor is a vital link for the community, serving pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and drivers,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  “SHA is pleased to get this project underway to enhance safety for all customers.  We ask that everyone traveling the area to use extra caution in the work zone.”

During the next two years, crews will remove and replace sections of concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk; replace concrete sidewalk ramps and driveway aprons; reconstruct concrete bus pads underneath the pavement at 25 Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus stops; and repair and resurface the pavement along Liberty Road.   SHA and its contractor, Gray and Son, Inc. of Timonium, will construct the improvements in four sections during the next two years:

2013: East and Westbound Liberty Road between St. Luke’s Lane and I-695;
2014: East and westbound Liberty Road between St. Luke’s Lane and the City/County line.

Work began this past week and crews will close the right lane along westbound MD 26 at Brubar Court and Croydon Road this Sunday.  The 24-hour right lane closure allows crews to safely pour and cure two concrete bus pads for MTA bus stops. Once the first two locations are complete, crews will replace one or more bus stops each Sunday for the next several weeks.

During other work associated with the project over next two years, crews may temporarily close one lane along sections of Liberty Road between 5 a.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday; between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and at night between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next day Monday through Thursday.

SHA last resurfaced this section of Liberty Road in 1994.  Weather permitting, the Liberty Road improvement project will be complete fall 2014.  Citizens with questions or concerns about construction work on Liberty Road may contact SHA’s District 4 Office – Construction Division at 410-229-2420, toll free at 1-866-998-0367, or by email: shadistrict4@sha.state.md.us

This project was made possible with funding from the Maryland Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013, which maintains crucial system preservation investments all allows Maryland to activate long-term strategies to invest in Maryland's transportation systems.  By putting people back to work in the transportation industry with $4.4 billion in new investments in the next six years, Maryland is creating hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity and providing Marylanders with the transportation infrastructure necessary to grow and prosper for decades to come.
