(August 21, 2013) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a resurfacing project Sunday, August 25 on MD 216 (Scaggsville Road) at the US 29 (Columbia Pike) interchange in Howard County. Weather permitting, the project will be complete  mid-September.

Work will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday nights. During those hours, motorists should anticipate lane closures with flagging on MD 216 as well as overnight closures of the exit ramp from southbound US 29 to east and westbound MD 216 and the ramp from east and westbound MD 216 to southbound US 29.

During the ramp closures, detours will direct traffic as follows:

To access MD 216 from southbound US 29:
• Proceed south and take the exit for MD 198;
• Follow signs to return to US 29 going north;
• Take exit 13 to MD 216.

To access southbound US 29 from east or westbound MD 216:

• Take the ramp to northbound US 29;
• Take exit 15 to John’s Hopkins Road;
• Follow signs to southbound US 29.

Crews will mill (remove the top layer of pavement), patch, overlay and restripe six-tenths of a mile of MD 216. The $650,000 project will be performed under SHA’s areawide paving contract with P. Flanigan & Sons, Inc., of Baltimore.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
