(August 13, 2013) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) has completed the nearly three year renovation of the historic US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) Bridge over the Patapsco River between Baltimore and Howard counties.  All travel lanes opened at 5 a.m. this morning.  While work will continue on the project requiring temporary lane closures, there will be two lanes open in each direction during peak travel times.

“The State Highway Administration appreciates drivers’ patience and cooperation as we worked to rehabilitate this critical structure along a key artery serving the Baltimore metropolitan area,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  “The improvements preserved the historic arch design and added decades to the service life of the bridge.  While work continues, we urge drivers to continue to stay alert and drive carefully through the work zone area.”

SHA started bridge renovations on the 77 year-old concert arch bridge in 2010.  Crews used a temporary bridge to carry US 40 traffic during construction.  For project information, click here.
