(November 19, 2013) – This week, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is scheduled to activate a new traffic signal on US 1(Washington Boulevard) at the intersection with Port Capital Drive in Howard County.

Beginning at 10 a.m. today, the signal will operate in a continuous “flash” mode for 72 hours to provide advance warning to motorists about the new traffic pattern. Electronic message signs have been placed along US 1 informing drivers that the signal will begin operating in full color mode (green-yellow-red) on Friday, November 22. Motorists should use extra caution in the area over the next few weeks as drivers adjust to the new signal.

The signal was installed in response to increasing traffic volumes at the intersection, which is located between MD 175 (Waterloo Road) and Montevideo Road near Elkridge. The average daily traffic on US 1 in this area is more than 27,000 vehicles per day. The approxiately $108,000 signal installation was completed as part of SHA’s areawide contract with Rommel Engineering and Construction Co. of Linthicum, MD.
