(November 25, 2013) –This Wednesday morning, November 27, weather permitting, crews will open a relocated intersection of Stone Road and MD 97 (Littlestown Pike) in Carroll County and close the old alignment of Stone Road. In the event of rain, snow or ice Wednesday, the traffic changes may be rescheduled for Monday morning, December 2.

Crews began work in May to relocate the end of Stone Road 1,100 feet north of the current location to provide a more level, straight connection with MD 97.  By moving the intersection and widening it for new acceleration and deceleration lanes, the new traffic pattern makes it easier for the 14,800 drivers who use this intersection to see oncoming traffic on both roads.

Design work in partnership with Carroll County began in 2009. The new intersection includes new designated turn lanes from MD 97 (Littlestown Pike) onto Stone Road, and a designated right turn lane from Stone Road onto southbound MD 97. Portable variable message signs will remain in place for several days after the opening to remind area and visiting drivers of the new traffic pattern.

The project was built by SHA contractor C.J. Miller Inc. of Hampstead. Customers with questions about the project or about operations on other State (numbered) routes in Carroll County may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100, toll-free at 1-800-635-5119 or email shadistrict7@sha.state.md.us

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
