(November 27, 2013) – Motorists should be prepared for lane closures and changing traffic patterns beginning this Sunday night December 1, and continuing through Monday, December  2, on the Motter Avenue Bridge over US 15 in Frederick.

As part of an ongoing Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) bridge replacement project in partnership with the City of Frederick, crews are preparing to shift traffic onto the newly constructed portion of the bridge on the north side.

Beginning Sunday evening at 6 p.m., flaggers will direct traffic on Motter Avenue as crews prepare the roadway and the nearby Pinewood Avenue traffic signal for the lane shift, which is expected to occur  late Sunday evening.

From Sunday evening through mid-day Monday, Motter Avenue traffic will be reduced to three lanes in the area of the bridge. Two lanes will travel  away from Downtown Frederick and one will head toward Downtown. By mid-day Monday, crews will restore the second lane of traffic headed toward Downtown.

Motorists should allow extra travel time or consider alternate routes during the shift and lane closure.

The shift marks the start of a new stage of the $15 million joint project between SHA and the City of Frederick to improve safety and traffic flow along Motter Avenue and Opossumtown Pike between US 15 and Thomas Johnson Drive. During the next stage, crews will demolish and rebuild the existing portion of the bridge. For more information about the project, visit www.tinyurl.com/motterbridge.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
