(December 14, 2013 – Evening update) – As the winter storm moves northeast, snow and sleet will change over to all rain this evening. The State Highway Administration (SHA) will continue to monitor pavements temperatures and keep crews on the road to patrol for any icy conditions. Snow emergency plans are in effect in Allegany, Carroll and Garrett counties.

For those who do travel, remember snow emergency plans restrict where vehicles can be parked and cars and trucks must have snow or radial tires. If your vehicle becomes disabled, move from the travel lane and onto the shoulder.

Although most of the precipitation is in the form of rain, motorists should reduce driving speeds and be careful on bridges, ramps and overpasses as they freeze first.  At SHA’s Statewide Operations Center, technicians are constantly monitoring pavement temperatures and maintain continuous communications with maintenance shops to ensure roads and bridges are safe and passable

Drivers should “Take it Slow on Ice and Snow” and reduce speeds during rain events to prevent the risk of hydroplaning.  Bridges, ramps and overpasses freeze first, so drivers should remain on guard at all times.
