(March 27, 2014) – On Saturday, March 29, residential property company Southern Management and its contractor, Traffic Engineering Services, will install three rooftop air conditioning units.  This work requires that one-block of southbound MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) between Fidler Lane and US 29 (Colesville Road) is completely closed to traffic. The closure begins at 5 a.m. A large crane will be placed in front of the Twin Towers apartment building, located at 8630 Georgia Avenue. Weather permitting, all traffic lanes should be open no later than 7 p.m. Saturday night.

Motorists should follow the approved and signed detour route around the work zone by turning left onto Spring Street from Georgia Avenue, then right on US 29 (Colesville Road) and then left on MD 97. Local and residential traffic will have access  on southbound MD 97 between Spring Street and Fidler Lane. To avoid delays, drivers may use Colesville Road to reach downtown Silver Spring. Drivers should plan ahead and add extra travel time.

The crane, which is three lanes wide, will take several hours to position in front of the building. Once the crane is in place, the process of removing and lowering the three old rooftop air conditioning units and lifting the three new units onto the roof and putting them into place will begin.

Residents and travelers are advised that construction equipment can be loud and disruptive. The residential management company and the contractor performing the work ask for your patience as crews work to complete the project.  In case of inclement weather, the closure and work will take place beginning 5 a.m. on Saturday, April 5.

Sidewalks within the work zone may be closed during the crane operation. Pedestrians will be directed  to safe crossings along northbound Georgia Avenue via construction cones, barrels and fencing. The sidewalks will reopen once the work is complete and  it is safe for pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians are strongly urged to avoid walking within the work zone along southbound Georgia Avenue.
