(June 4, 2014) – After midnight Friday morning, June 6, the State Highway Administration (SHA) will close a section of Cedar Lane between MD 355 (Rockville Pike) and Elmhirst Parkway in Bethesda.  The closure is part of the $13.8 million Bethesda Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) MD 355 intersection reconstruction project at Cedar Lane.  This improvement project will add new turn and through lanes, sidewalk and upgraded traffic signals as part of the construction.

“This temporary closure will allow crews to replace underground pipes and install a new traffic signal at Elmhirst Parkway and Cedar Lane,” said Brian Young, District Engineer for Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.  “We thank drivers and residents for their patience this summer, and to please use the signed detour route.”

Weather permitting, SHA is expected to open Cedar Lane no later than Friday, August 22.  Covered temporary traffic signs are in place and will be uncovered overnight on Thursday, directing area drivers to use MD 547 (Strathmore Avenue/Knowles Avenue), MD 355 and Summit Avenue.  Vehicles will not be able access to Elmhirst Parkway from Cedar Lane.

Portable variable message signs along State routes were activated on May 22, advising drivers about the upcoming closure.  Thousands of vehicles use this busy section of MD 355 daily to reach the National Institute of Health, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Naval Support Activity Bethesda, downtown Bethesda and area residences.  Pedestrian access will be directed to safe crossings via orange construction signs cones, barrels, and fencing. SHA awarded the contract to Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg.

Those who have questions about this project may contact the SHA District 3 Office at shadistrict3@sha.state.md.us or by calling 301-513-7300.  Travelers can plan their routes by visiting www.MD511.org, and view area traffic cameras and and lane closures in Montgomery County.
