(June 6, 2014) – The Maryland State Highway Administration advises motorists of overnight lane closures along I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Silver Spring starting next week.  Beginning Monday night, June 9 and continuing each weeknight through Thursday night, crews will remove the existing girders from the MD 193 (University Boulevard) bridge over I-495.

This work will require a fifteen minute, intermittent closure of all lanes on either the Inner or Outer Loop between Midnight and 4 a.m.  Weather permitting, lanes will re-open no later than 4 a.m.  Drivers will begin to see work zone signs and traffic stoppages as they approach Exits 28 (MD 650 - New Hampshire Avenue) or Exit 30 (US 29 - Colesville Road).  No overnight closures are scheduled on Friday or Saturday, weather permitting.

The work is part of a $9.6 million bridge replacement project to replace the University Boulevard Bridge over I-495.  As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
