(July 1, 2014) – On Monday night, July 7, the State Highway Administration (SHA)’s Intercounty Connector (ICC) Project will shift traffic on US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) between Contee Road and the Muirkirk Road Bridge, temporarily splitting the northbound lanes by concrete barriers. At 6 p.m., crews will close one lane in each direction on US 1, weather permitting. This work is associated with Contract D/E of the ICC Project.

During the traffic switch the two northbound lanes of US 1 will be temporarily closed and one lane will be redirected onto the current left southbound lane while crews move barrier wall into place. Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane will reopen to traffic by 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 8.

As part of this temporary traffic pattern, the right lane of northbound US 1 will be shifted west until fall to allow crews to work in the closed lane. The new northbound US 1 right lane will be located between two work zones for the duration of this construction phase. The lane closures are necessary to relocate the right lane and perform tie-in paving and lane striping.

Motorists may use I-95 or MD 295 (Baltimore Washington Parkway) to the east as alternate routes.  Portable message signs, cones, and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone. In case of inclement weather, this work will occur Tuesday, July 8 into Wednesday, July 9.

SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds and stay alert for work crews. For more information about the project, please call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
