WHY:

SHA is scheduled to begin a major construction project in 2015 to widen southbound I-695 (outer loop) between south of the US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) interchange and the MD 144 (Frederick Road) interchange. This project will provide a fourth travel lane along this section of the outer loop, and improve safety and traffic flow.  This project will tie into the previously completed I-695 outer loop widening project between the Frederick Road and I-95 interchanges.

This project includes constructing a continuous auxiliary lane to connect the US 40 on-ramp and the Edmondson Avenue off-ramp, and a continuous auxiliary lane to connect the Edmondson Avenue on-ramp and the MD 144 off-ramp.

SHA will also replace the I-695 outer loop bridges over Ingleside Avenue and Exit 14, the Edmondson Avenue interchange. As part of the bridge replacement, SHA will increase the clearance under the bridges for high-profile vehicles. Construction is scheduled to begin summer 2015 and will take approximately four years to complete.

SHA is also beginning design and study activities to construct new noise barriers along I-695 from south of US 40 to south of MD 144. Construction is scheduled to begin spring 2019, and will take approximately two years to complete.
