(June 11, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) State Highway Administration (SHA) continues making progress on the  $3.35 million intersection improvement project on MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) from south of Center Drive to north of West Cedar Lane/Oakmont Avenue in Bethesda, Montgomery County. Beginning Sunday night and continuing each night through Thursday, crews will temporarily close two lanes in both directions of MD 187 within the project limits from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The lane closures are necessary to install underground conduit for new traffic signals. Weather permitting, this phase of work should be complete by the end of the month, weather permitting.

Heavy construction equipment will be used to excavate sections of the driving surface on MD 187 where the underground conduit will be installed.

In addition, crews may also close a single lane on northbound MD 187 weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and southbound from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. During this phase of construction, the daytime lane closures allow crews to expedite steel plate removal and to fill roadway trenches with concrete. Weather permitting; the entire project should be complete late summer 2016.

SHA appreciates residents’ and travelers’ patience as crews work to finish the project. SHA advises that equipment used for this and all phases of construction can be loud and disruptive.

In addition to this project, drivers may also encounter mobile or short-term work zones.  Click here for a listing of major SHA projects in Maryland.  Always expect the unexpected, pay extra close attention and drive slowly through any work zone. Whether it’s a tree trimming operation or a bridge project, be aware when orange is there: Think Orange (the color of construction equipment and signs), stay alert and slow down. Everyone is at risk.
