(July 1, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) advises travelers to seek alternate north-south routes for the Wednesday evening commute in Wheaton, Montgomery County.

This afternoon, local emergency responders closed a section of southbound MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) between Shorefield and Weisman Roads (south of Randolph Road) due to a water main break.

As Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) crews assess and plan repairs, SHA suggests MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) or MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) as alternate routes.

If traveling in the Wheaton and Glenmont areas, drivers are reminded to plan for extra travel time and to remain alert for work crews at this intersection. Maryland 511 provides up to date traffic information, incident reports and work zone updates by accessing www.md511.org.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to keep traffic safely moving in work zones, please partner with us because work zone safety is everyone’s business – slow down and stay alert. Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone.
