(July 2, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) reminds travelers of an upcoming temporary road closure as part of the MD 32 (Patuxent Freeway) improvements between Day and West Friendship roads in Howard County.

On Sunday, July 12 at 8 p.m., construction crews will close West Friendship Road between Forsythe Road and MD 32 for five days. The five-day total closure allows crews to mill, pave and apply new pavement markings at West Friendship Road. Crews will reopen West Friendship Road by Friday evening, July 17.

Motorists driving on northbound MD 32 will be directed to turn left onto Sandosky Road to reach the Town of Sykesville. In addition, the left turn lane from northbound MD 32 onto West Friendship Road will also be closed.  Drivers should follow detour signs and allow extra time for travel.

The $6 million project will add a nearly one-mile segment of MD 32 to accommodate a continuous center turn lane, full-width shoulders signed and marked as bicycle lanes, and acceleration and right turn/deceleration lanes at the two intersections. Other related work includes installing storm drain pipes, constructing stormwater management facilities, landscaping and reforestation.

Once the detour is lifted, motorists may encounter temporary lane closures during off-peak hours between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.  SHA’s contractor for the project is Kinsley Construction, Inc., of Timonium. Weather permitting, the project will be complete summer 2016.

In addition to this project, drivers may also encounter mobile or short-term work zones. Always expect the unexpected, pay extra close attention and drive slowly through any work zone. Whether it’s a tree trimming operation or a bridge project, be aware when orange is there: Think Orange (the color of construction equipment and signs), stay alert and slow down. Everyone is at risk.

Those who have questions about this work may contact the SHA District 7 Office at 301-624-8200 or by e-mail at shadistrict7@sha.state.md.us.
