Nighttime Single-Lane Closures Allow Crews to Pave New Merge Lane

(October 22, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) has good news for St. Mary’s commuters – the MD 4 widening project will be complete by late fall.  In order to finish the final elements of the project, crews will close the right through lane on northbound MD 4 (Patuxent Beach Road) between MD 235 (Three Notch Road) and Oak Drive during overnight hours. The closure allows crews to remove the temporary barrier wall and pave the new traffic lane. Crews will work between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. through late November.

This work is part of the $3.3 million project to widen one mile of northbound MD 4 from MD 235 Patuxent Boulevard. When complete, northbound MD 4 will have two through lanes and a new dedicated right-turn lane to Oak Drive. Click here for overall project information.

This project will improve traffic flow through the intersection and improve safety by providing motorists additional space to merge onto the northbound MD 4 travel lane approaching the Gov. Thomas Johnson Bridge. Remaining work includes milling (removing top layer) and paving of all lanes. Weather permitting; the project will be complete by late November.

Those who have questions about this work may call the SHA District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603.
