Expansion Joint Repair to Last up to Three Weeks

(March 14, 2016) – Beginning tonight and continuing Sundays through Thursdays until work is complete, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close two lanes on the outer loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) Bridge over MacArthur Boulevard in Montgomery County.  SHA’s contractor, Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg, will replace bridge expansion joints.  Weather permitting the work should be complete by the first week of April.

At 9 p.m. each night, crews will close one left lane, then two lanes at 10 p.m.  All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning.  As work progresses on the $100,000 repair project, crews will shift to work on the two right lanes to complete all outer loop repairs.

Once all work is complete on the outer loop, crews will begin work on the inner loop of I-495.  Overnight travelers planning to cross into Virginia should plan extra travel time and consider taking I-95 south over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.  SHA will use arrow boards and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.  For real-time traffic information, please visit www.md511.org or call 855-466-3511 using a hands free device.
