Temporary Overnight Closures of Northbound I-695 at Exit 38, MD 150 This Weekend, March 18 - 20

(March 16, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is continuing the reconstruction of the bridge carrying northbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) over the Northeast Creek tributary of the Back River.  The outer loop bridge is just prior to the I-695/MD 702 (Southeast Freeway) split in Essex.

This weekend, contractor crews will pour a new concrete bridge deck (riding surface).  To ensure the safety of drivers and contractor crews, SHA will close the bridge and northbound

I-695 will be detoured at exit 38, MD 150 (Eastern Boulevard) from:

• 10 p.m. Friday, March 18 until 6 a.m. Saturday, March 19
• 10 p.m. Saturday, March 19 until 6 a.m. Sunday, March 20
• 10 p.m. Sunday, March 20 until 6 a.m. Monday, March 21

During the temporary night-time bridge closures, Maryland State Police will stop and detour traffic onto exit 38, eastbound MD 150 (Eastern Boulevard) through Essex to northbound MD 702 and back to I-695.  SHA and its contractor will use digital message boards, temporary traffic signs, and barrels to guide motorists through the detour route.

SHA awarded the $5.3 million contract to Allan Myers, Inc. of Fallston.  In addition to replacement of the concrete deck, the bridge rehabilitation project includes:; replacement of the steel girders; roadway shoulder reconstruction; bridge and highway drainage improvements; pavement resurfacing on the bridge approaches; installation of new traffic signs and pavement markings.

During the next year, there will be temporary single lane closures on northbound I-695 (outer loop) at the bridge during off-peak hours on weeknights, with one 11-foot lane remaining open on the bridge at all times.  The bridge rehabilitation project began summer 2015 and will be complete late fall 2016, weather permitting.
