Overnight Lane Closures, Intermittent Traffic Stops Needed to Expedite Work

(May 5, 2016) – Drivers in Montgomery County will experience a new driving surface on a portion of I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Silver Spring, Montgomery County.

Beginning tonight, crews will resurface I-495 between MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) and US 29 (Colesville Road). Weather permitting, resurfacing should be complete by mid-July. All phases of work will begin on the outer loop of I-495 and progress to the inner loop.

To perform the work, crews will close the following lanes on I-495 between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays:

• One lane at 8 p.m.

• Two lanes at 10 p.m.

• Three lanes at midnight

• Intermittent full traffic stops of up to 15 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.

Crews will patch, grind, resurface and apply new pavement markings to all beltway traffic lanes, including the inner and outer loop ramps to MD 193. Motorists should consider MD 650 or US 29 as alternates during resurfacing. Maryland State Police will assist crews in closing beltway travel lanes for this work.

Drivers should plan ahead, be aware of changing traffic patterns and may encounter work zone delays. Equipment used to complete all phases of work can be disruptive.
