New Bridge to Open June 1st; Part of I-695 Widening Project

(May 25, 2016) – A major milestone will be upcoming for the $32 million I-695 widening project (Baltimore Beltway) between MD 41 (Perring Parkway) and MD 147 (Harford Road) in Parkville, Baltimore County.  On Wednesday night, June 1, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will switch traffic onto the new Old Harford Road Bridge over I-695.

“This project is progressing despite the recent weeks-long rain and the new bridge is a major benefit to motorists who use Old Harford Road,” said Acting District Engineer Wendy Wolcott.  “This project will improve safety and help to ease congestion for the thousands of motorists who use this section of the beltway each day.”

The new two-lane bridge will carry two through lanes, one left turn lane, shoulders and ADA-compliant sidewalks on both sides.

Traffic will be alternated using a flagging operation on Old Harford Road beginning at 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 1 until 5 a.m. Thursday, June 2.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

A complete listing of current roadway projects is included in e-Road Ready 2016, the online brochure. Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
