Temporary Weekend Closure on MD 214 Starts Friday Evening, June 3; Hall Road Crossing Repairs Start Monday Morning, June 6

(May 31, 2016) – Next Friday evening June 3 CSX Transportation will begin repairs to their railroad crossings in Prince George’s County that will require the temporary closures of two major roadways.

The MD 214 (Central Avenue) rail repairs require equipment to be placed within CSX right-of-way during the weekend of June 3-6.  On Friday night, June 3, crews will close MD 214 (Central Avenue) between Hall Station Road and Hall Road.  CSX crews will close westbound MD 214 lanes at 5 p.m. and then eastbound MD 214 lanes at 7 p.m. Central Avenue travel lanes are scheduled to open no later than Monday, June 6 at 5 a.m.

Once this work is complete, crews will close Hall Road on Monday morning, June 6 through Thursday, June 9.  The roadway will be blocked to through traffic between Ashleigh Station Court and Pointer Ridge Drive. Work on this railroad crossing will continue through Thursday afternoon.

Residents and local businesses will have access to their homes and properties.  Portable electronic message signs will also be placed along US 301 (east of the project closure) and MD 214 alerting drivers to the upcoming work.  Cones and barrels will also alert motorists to the work zone.

Regional travelers may use US 301 (Crain Highway), MD 193 (Largo Road), MD 193 (Enterprise Road/Watkins Park Drive), US 50 (John Hanson Highway) and I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway).

Local travelers and residents will be directed to use MD 214 and Hall Road as each closure occurs. SHA encourages residents to support area businesses that will be open during the closure. Temporary traffic and work zone signage will direct traffic near and around the work areas.

Engineers determined that a weekend closure will allow CSX repair crews to complete the work in the shortest time possible.  Travelers are strongly advised to plan for extra time during this temporary closure.  CSX Transportation will perform maintenance work to remove the deteriorated steel reinforced rubber panels at the two locations and replace them with a new asphalt surface with shaped rubber-edge sealing.  Crews will stage equipment along the railroad’s right-of-way and work along all four travel lanes of MD 214.

More than 22,500 drivers travel on MD 214 in this area every day. Those who have questions about the work may call 1-877-TELL-CSX (1-877-835-5279).  In case of inclement weather, the repairs will take place the weekend of June 10.
