Final Phase of $7.2 Million Project to Improve Southbound I-83 between Hereford and Hunt Valley; Motorists Should Expect Lane Closures on Weekdays and Plan for Extra Travel Time

(June 9, 2016) – At 10 a.m. Monday, June 13, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin final improvements to southbound I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) between Mt. Carmel Road (MD 137) and Shawan Road.

SHA’s contractor, C. J. Miller, LLC of Hampstead, will grind (remove the top layer of pavement), resurface and restripe the pavement on southbound I-83 during the next several weeks.  Crews will close one lane at any time weekdays except during morning peak travel hours, between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.  There will be no lane closures on weekends, between 5 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Monday.

Approximately 60,000 vehicles use this section of I-83 each day, so motorists should plan for extra travel time between Hereford and Hunt Valley in June and July.  SHA will use digital message signs and arrow boards and traffic barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.

The pavement work is part of SHA’s $7.2 million project to improve drainage, safety and ride quality on seven miles of southbound I-83.  Improvements include: storm drain system upgrades such as new pipes, inlets, and reconstruction of storm drain outfalls; tree trimming; installation of new guardrail, and construction of new curb and gutter where needed on interchange ramps.  The project began late summer 2015 and will be complete mid-summer, weather permitting.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

A complete listing of current roadway projects is included in e-Road Ready 2016, the online brochure on www.roads.maryland.gov.  Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
