Off-Peak Lane Closures Expected through Late Fall Near the Montgomery – Prince George’s County Line

(July 13, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is continuing with its $12.6 million safety and resurfacing project on I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) between MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) and US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.  Weather and progress permitting, the four-mile project is scheduled for completion late fall.

Beginning Thursday night at 9 p.m., crews will close two lanes of I-95/I-495 for resurfacing. Crews will patch the roadway, remove the top layer of asphalt, apply new asphalt and install new pavement markings within the project limits.

Crews are permitted to close one lane in either direction on the Capital Beltway weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and two lanes Sundays through Thursdays from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.  More than 260,000 motorists approach this section of roadway each day so motorists should plan extra travel time

To keep crews and motorists safe during resurfacing, SHA will close the College park weigh station and park and ride lot each night, Sundays through Thursdays, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should consider using MD 212 (Powder Mill Road) as an alternate during construction.

Motorists should plan ahead and make alternate overnight parking arrangements. Tractor trailer drivers are advised to use the Hyattstown, Frederick or Upper Marlboro weigh stations as overnight alternatives during all phases of reconstruction.

Preliminary work on the project began in April. Crews have completed storm water inlet construction to improve roadway drainage and are installing guardrail, patching the roadway and stabilizing roadway slopes.

SHA’s contractor for the work is Francis O. Day Company of Rockville.

SHA asks for your patience as crews work to complete the project. For the latest real-time travel information, log onto www.md511.org or call 1-855-466-3511 using a hands free device.
