Motorists Should Expect Single Nighttime Lane Closures

(September 14, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) recently began resurfacing a portion of northbound US 29 (Columbia Pike), between the Middle Patuxent River Bridge and MD 32.  Weather permitting, the $1.1 million project will be complete late fall.

SHA’s contractor, CJ Miller, LLC. of Hampstead, will patch, grind (remove the top layer of pavement), resurface and restripe the pavement. New guardrail and reflective pavement markers will also be installed for additional safety.  Drivers will be guided through the work zone by barrels, arrow boards and message signs, and should expect single lane overnight closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Approximately 87,000 vehicles use this section of US 29 each day, therefore motorists should plan extra travel time while the work is being done.

SHA is also widening northbound US 29 between south of Seneca Drive to south of MD 175 in Columbia.  The $26 million, 3.19 mile project is scheduled to be completed spring 2017, weather permitting. SHA’s contractor for the project is Allan Myers Inc. of Worcester, PA.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
