Dynamic Control Traffic Signal Will Provide Part-Time Double Left Turns During Afternoon Rush Hour at Jones Bridge Road Intersection

(September 21, 2016) – On Friday, September 30, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration will activate an upgraded traffic signal at the MD 355 (Rockville Pike) / Jones Bridge Road intersection in Montgomery County.  The signal will provide a double-left turn movement from southbound MD 355 to eastbound Jones Bridge Road during the afternoon weekday rush hour only (between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.).

Currently, the southbound traffic pattern on MD 355 approaching Jones Bridge Road includes three through travel lanes and one dedicated left turn lane. The upgraded signal adds a fiber optic sign over the third through lane.  During the afternoon rush hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. the overhead sign will display a left-turn only arrow, to indicate that the lane should be treated as a left-turn only lane.

On weekends and weekdays during non-afternoon rush hours between 6 p.m. and 3 p.m., drivers on southbound MD 355 will use the three through travel lanes and one left turn lane, as currently designed.

The traffic signal enhancement is part of intersection projects associated with BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) improvements in Montgomery County.

Those who have questions about this project may contact the SHA District 3 Office at 301-513-7409 or by e-mail at shadistrict3@sha.state.md.us. Drivers should remain alert and look out for other drivers and pedestrians traveling in the intersection.
