SHA Cleaning and Painting Six Bridges In Howard County

(October 3, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) must temporarily close the pedestrian walkway along MD 32 at Broken Land Parkway.  The fenced pathway, located between the eastern and western ridesharing lots, will be closed later next week to allow crews to clean and paint the Broken Land Parkway Bridge over MD 32.  Work will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for approximately one week, weather permitting.

SHA awarded an areawide bridge cleaning and painting contract to Manolis Painting, Inc. of Baldwin.  The contractor will clean and pain six bridges between now and late fall.

Bridges included in the approximately $700,000 contract are:

Howard County:

• Eastbound MD 32 Over US 29
• Westbound MD 32 Over US 29
• Shaker Drive Over MD 32
• Broken Land Parkway Over MD 32
• Eastbound MD 32 Over Middle Patuxent River
• Westbound MD 32 Over Middle Patuxent River

Motorists traveling under these bridges may encounter temporary lane closures during off-peak hours while crews install work platforms and containment systems, but the majority of the work will not impact traffic. The project will include blasting away old paint and repainting the bridge supports. This work is part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program and will help extend the service life of the bridges.

Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
